Why Counselling?

Why would someone seek counselling or psychotherapy?

CounsellingAt certain times in our lives, we all encounter difficult or challenging situations. Family and friends can be a great support yet occasionally we may need someone with more skill to talk to. Counselling can be helpful for example, when we feel anxious, depressed or suicidal, have suffered a loss/bereavement, feel stressed and unable to cope, lack confidence or experience relationship or family difficulties. At other times we may simply want an opportunity to explore who we are and what gives meaning to our lives.

What is counselling/psychotherapy?

Counselling can provide a supportive environment to enable you to make the changes you want in your life. The Counsellor/ Therapists are trained professionals who will listen carefully without judgement. Counselling is an opportunity to explore your problems in a confidential, caring environment and discover your own solutions.

What should I look for in a counsellor?

A good counsellor/therapist is someone you feel comfortable with. You should feel listened to and respected. There are so many different approaches to therapy. Finding the right counsellor is not always about techniques, it is about what feels right to you. What works for one person may not work for another. We encourage you to ask questions and negotiate with your counsellor what approach works best for you. All counsellors/therapists should be associated with or accredited member of a professional association, for example, the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, the Irish Association for Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy or the Psychological Society of Ireland.

How long will I have to attend?

Clients will usually attend for one session per week. This session lasts for one hour and if possible be arranged for the same time each week. Depending on the nature of the problems/issues you wish to address, we offer short term (6-8wks) or longer term counselling. This decision is for you to make.

How much will it cost?

South West Counselling Centre offers a low cost affordable service. Fees at the centre are 60 euro on a sliding scale. However where financial circumstances are problematic this fee can be negotiated with your counsellor.
